Chess Review
How do you run a chess class/team?

What do you review and how do you practice and structure things?

If you’re running a class:

That depends a bit on what you mean by class. Typically in a class there are all kinds of different players.

You need to figure out their skill level and divide them. A teacher for every group is ideal. If you only need training for one chess team, that does not apply as they’ll be roughly the same strength.

You will probably want to do a session every week or month, depending on how much time there is. Basically what you want is for all players to solve combinations on a regular basis to improve their tactical play. This is far more important even than strategy or openings. By combinations I mean certain positions in which the player who moves wins material or mates.

Especially if there a few lessons, give them homework. For experienced players explaining is almost not needed. If these are indeed younger players, someone needs to explain about forks, pins, skewers and all that.

Strategy lessons are very hard to give. You’ll want your players to know something about attacking and defending, the importance of pawn structure and the endgame. You can’t let people do this on their own for the most part, so every lesson you need to show a game or position on a demonstration board to explain the strategical idea to the whole class.

Last but not least..Some opening knowledge is crucial, but don’t go overboard. If they are beginners, make sure they develop their pieces to natural squares and if they’re more advanced, it won’t hurt to check if they know the ideas of at least 1 opening for white and black. Nothing can hurt you more than learning all kinds of opening moves without understanding why these moves were played.

You can let the students play eachother for practice as well on the same session, though that takes time. If the players are young it is better though.

About running a team:

Make sure you have enough players and at least 2 or 3 substitutes.

Know when the matches are and tell your players. Give them a schedule of the whole season, which they will probably throw away or lose. Email or phone them all before every match later.

Make sure all players check in with you 2 weeks ahead of the match.

Check the play date, time and location and arrange transportation. Contact people of building/other team captain if possible.

All players need to follow guidelines from the teamcaptain. You should never allow a player to go for a draw if you need a point pretty badly, for example.

Create a good atmosphere. Having coffee together before the match and dinner afterwards is ideal.

Don’t blame your teammates for losing..they tried.

Ok..gl
